#10YearsOfIPL: A look into franchise-based T20 cricket league

How is India's most popular sports league doing? | #10YearsOfIPL + #MultimediaStorytelling + #MAD by Monika Arora
The good, gross, and oh-my-gosh of IPL. #PunIntended

IPL has come a long way since 2008.

What started out as a T20 domestic tournament under the branding of BCCI, has quickly become one of the most popular sports leagues in the world.

But it didn't happen overnight?

Read on to get insights about the journey of Indian Premier League since its inception.

Indeed, IPL organisers succeeded tremendously in finding the sweet spot of entertainment, format and a sustainable business model.

While the cash-rich T20 league was never short of controversies and media limelight, one still hopes for thorough management of cricket's future talent.

Let's see if coming years would focus on just that, or something else.

1. Runs scored per season: A total of 175,372 runs has been scored in the IPL since 2008. The more the teams participated, the more the runs were scored.

2. Runs accumulated by teams: Sunrisers Hyderabad's maiden IPL triumph last year reinforce winning a match requires NOT just good batting BUT contribution from all departments of a team. Royal Challengers Bangalore accounted for 16% of all runs scored in IPL9 AND ended the season as runners-up (only?!).

3. Top scorer for the season: To win an Orange Cap in IPL, all one need is 1) consistent scoring, and 2) hitting most of those runs off fours and sixes. Yes, just that folks! On average, all these Season's Toppers scored 65% of their runs from 4s and 6s.

4. Top scorer's contribution to the team: Ravindra Jadeja is the only player in IPL history who scored most runs for his team (Rajasthan Royals in 2009) without hitting a century or half-century. That's why we call him #SirJadeja, you see. ;)

5. All-time best batsmen: 8 out of 20 leading batsmen in the IPL have played for RCB, out of which five are part of their current squad. Kinda proves how the Bangalore-based franchise have scored 21k-plus runs since 2008, second only after Mumbai Indians.

6. Wickets taken per season: Since 2008, the bowlers in IPL have taken 6,712 wickets. Though, year 2016 had been the lowest in terms of wicket-tally; not a single team reached or crossed the 100+ mark for a single season.

7. Wickets scalped by teams: Taking more wickets may fancy one's chances to win an IPL trophy. At least, the numbers says so. Five teams in past have done the same, they are: Rajasthan Royals (2008), Deccan Chargers (2009), Chennai Super Kings (2010), Mumbai Indians (2013), and Sunrisers Hyderabad (2016).

8. Leading wicket-taker for the season: On average, leading wicket-takers in IPL conceded 7.31 runs per over to earn a wicket. But all-rounders too have a place to win a Purple Cap; Dwayne Bravo has done it twice for CSK.

9. Leading wicket-taker's contribution to the team: Deccan Chargers (now defunct) is the only team in IPL history whose top-bowlers bagged more than 20% of all the wickets taken in a season by the then Hyderabad-based franchise.

10. All-time best bowlers: Top-3 in this All-time best IPL bowlers list highlights a crazy combination: Pacer (Lasith Malinga, MI), Spinner (Amit Mishra, DD), and an All-rounder (Dwayne Bravo, GL). Kinda says quality bowling and wicket-taking ability outplays all else.

11. Most successful fielders: Right-handers tend to make better fielders. 15 out of 20 in the All-time best IPL fielders list are Right-hand batsman/ bowler/ all-rounder. So, is 'Right' more right in T20?

12. Most successful wicket-keepers: IPL has been a place for new names to shine (and sadly, fade away as the time goes!). While Dinesh Karthik played less matches AND collected most 'wickets' in the all-time list; Yogesh Takawale, who represented Mumbai Indians in 2008, topped the wicket-keeping tally for the season. A surprising stat indeed, what do you think?

13. Most successful captains: Gautam Gambhir and MS Dhoni (now retired as captain) are the only two who have played 100+ IPL matches as a Captain. Between them, they share 250 matches with a winning percentage of 58%.

14. Umpires' representation: Kumar Dharmasena of Sri Lanka has officiated most matches (87) in the IPL. But it's India, who has the highest representation (25 Umpires in 476 matches) in terms of raw numbers.

15. Emerging player of the season: So far, all founding teams in the IPL have had an Emerging Player of the Season except CSK. And, KXIP is the only team that has done it twice (2012 & 2014).

16. IPL in summary: A total of 582 matches has been played in IPL by 76 teams since 2008 (considering aggregate total). So, how did the players performed in numbers?
Consider this:
42 hundreds by 27 players
811 half-centuries by 128 players
457 4-wicket haul by 110 players

17. Player retention & performance (batting): There is a strong co-relation between retaining a player and the individual's performance in the subsequent year(s). However, batsmen are more consistent than bowlers, and, perhaps, that's why are retained more often.

18. Player retention & performance (bowling): While the link between player retention and the subsequent year's performance cannot be denied, data suggests that a team's leading wicket-taker - in most cases - ended up contributing more than 20% of all wickets taken by the team in a season. Perhaps that's why some bowlers stay longer within a team than others.

19. Teams' dependency on batting and bowling: On average, IPL teams rely a little more on their top-batsmen (21.07%) as compared with top-bowlers (19.73%). And, unsurprisingly, RR is the only founding team that is least dependable on an individual's performance to win matches (Batsmen: 19.63%, Bowlers: 18.8%).

20. Top-performers in IPL: (Just) 76 players account for one-fifth of all runs scored and all wickets taken in the IPL since 2008. Top-performers do matter, big time. Quite impressive, isn't it?

21. Runs scored vs. wickets taken: When IPL teams are neutralized to 8-a-season, every second year (2009 and 2015) saw a dip in total runs scored. Bowling, however, largely remains on an upward curve except the year 2016 that was the lowest of all seasons.

22. Orange cap vs. purple cap: Virat Kohli has the most IPL runs (possible) for a batsmen in a season (973 runs in 2016 for RCB), while Dwayne Bravo's record with the ball (32 wickets in 2013 for CSK) seems near unshakable.
